We've had Leh to ourselves for the last five days but the road is finally open and the influx of tourists has started. At least bananas are back on the menu. It's been quite neat really adding to the sense of isolation that embodies Ladakh. We have been the only guests in our 3 storey hotel so got the room with the best view ever. Special discount rate although no hot water because they didn't turn it on until more people arrived. Instead we got tea and buckets of hot water delivered to our room every morning. Tea in bed and then a bucket shower.
We spent a day visiting some palaces and monasteries. They are all built atop hillocks and are full of glittering gold buddhas, wall paintings and thankas which are delicate paintings of Buddha and his life.
And then I got sick. At the point where I had a constant severe abdo pain on the right side Bry was planning how to get me out of here. Maybe being isolated isn't so good when you need an appendicectomy. I decided it was just a bad gastro and took lots of drugs and it seems to have settled. So we've been pretty quiet for a couple of days but plan to head off tomorrow and go further afield. Bryan has finally convinced me to go via motorbike and has a Royal Enfield booked. I have to admit that the roads in Ladakh are a lot quieter than the rest of India. We'll see how it goes.
The streets of Leh are littered with sleeping dogs and short fluffy donkeys and of course cows.
Namaste Sandy
