It's not so bad having to spend another day in Srinagar. I spent the morning in my favorite spot on the houseboat veranda drinking endless cups of tea, talking and reading.
The boss here couldn't cope with our inactivity so sent us off on another shikara ride through the canals of the city. We had the turbo charged gondola ride with two boatmen paddling hard to out strip the rain at our heels. We sheltered at the market then made our way haphazardly through India's answer to Venice. Houses, shops, temples and sheep right on the edge of the canal. The more serious boatman took us home for chai. To a house on an island, surrounded by submerged gardens and overhanging trees and full of his extended family. The young rascally rastafarian boatman took us a merry dance under many bridges. With much laughter and OMGs we squeezed under successively smaller spaces until we eventually got stuck. No worries. Just dismantle the top half of the shikara while balanced in the middle of a busy waterway. They have a saying about the roads in India which is "anything is possible". I think the same goes for paddling the canals of Srinagar. Good fun.
Namaste Sandy
